FORWARD__Space, a 50-minute dance and sweat class, is back with in-person classes for the first time since March. It’s a long awaited return after months of going digital, and right before Cuomo’s announcement reopening gyms.
With an official launch last Friday, now through September 21 FORWARD__Space will take place on the lawn of the Southampton Arts Center, in the heart of Southampton Village . Opening weekend was sold out. New faces had their hearts pumping to the addictive beats while returning Space junkies enthusiastically greeted their favorite team.
Judging by last summers popularity, classes are expected to sell out pretty quickly.
“We had groups of phenomenal guests that range from professional dancers to people who just love to vibe and release to the beat,” said world-renowned choreographer, artistic director, and master teacher Kristin Sudeikis of opening weekend. “The goal is that we drop over-thinking. Instead, we are unlocking an intuitive sense that innately exists in every body by way of clear, precise, and simultaneously freeing and expansive movement— all set to incredibly intentional music and instruction.”
This is far from your average dance class. While each instructor has an impressive background in the creative expression, the sessions are more like a mashup of dance camp, kundalini, and your favorite J-Lo music video. It’s energetically healing as it encourages self-expression between easy to follow choreographed movements.
The classes are capped at 25 spots, with markers on the ground indicating proper spacing, and take place Thursday – Monday. Each will be taught by Sudeikis and fellow master instructor Rachel Warren, with guest appearances by Maresa D’Amore-Morrison, in a true sanctuary of wellness surrounded by trees and open sky. When arriving all guests go through a simple screening process including a temperature check with contactless, digital thermometer, and masks must be worn upon entering and leaving.
Prior to the pandemic, Sudeikis always ended her classes with positive intentions. Now, her message resonates even more, and it’s what sets FORWARD__Space apart from the rest. After months of isolation and virtual workouts, in-person sessions are both physically and mentally freeing. It’s rooted in a communal connection to fellow humans, in the same space, with a tangible vibe that simply can’t be felt through a computer screen– a place of inward and outward freedom.
“We all feel incredibly grateful to be here, doing this in nature for the next 5 weeks, and are moved by the kind reception. It’s vibrant with possibility— such a gift to be here,” Sudeikis added.
There’s even some new swag. “For the Future, From The Future” is a limited edition, global design, long sleeve (only available in the Hamptons), created by Sudeikis. The ultra soft, black shirt spreads the “idea of acknowledging where we have been while simultaneously acknowledging the vast possibility of our individual and collective future(s).” The coordinates on the bottom lead back to the location of their NYC space, 24 Spring Street, where it all began.
“To me, dance, music, and movement are all vital components that can lead us to connect with ourselves and another. We can feel into and release what no longer serves by way of the music, the precise yet freeing dance and athletic movement.”
